Directly Playful

  • California Building 2205 California St NE Minneapolis, MN 55418 (map)

Directly Playful features the work of ten artists whose lively approach to making defines their work and processes. In July 2017, James Davis, Amanda Dobbratz, Rachel Donner, Bebe Federmann, Yoonjee Kwak, Didem Mert, Arlynn Nobel, Ronan Peterson, Carla Prinster, and Koen Vrij lived and worked together in residence at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. During the residency, the artists collaborated on numerous pieces, pushing their work in new directions and exploring unfamiliar possibilities. This exhibition highlights their playful experimentations and collaborations.

Watershed’s open-concept studio encourages artists to constantly communicate and share ideas during their time together. Hours spent side-by-side in the studio provided the participants with the opportunity to push their work in new and often unfamiliar directions. Inspired by the creative momentum that developed at Watershed, the artists will continue working together on collaborative and independent pieces for this exhibition.

Directly Playful embodies the transformative impact of sharing space and time with other artists during a residency. The show will underscore how the artists’ working processes evolved or were influenced by the connections they made at Watershed. In addition to ceramic pieces, the exhibition will also include a book of sketches generated by the artists. The book will enable viewers to gain a better understanding of how their ideas evolved throughout the collaboration process.
